American Rifleman (July, 1980 page 28) contains a very different set of dates for serial numbers through 193000. Savage & Stevens Arms & History, by Bill West. Listed below is history of the two companies, which will help. The Savage company reserved their name to a more deluxe double, (a dressed up version of the standard model Stevens 311) and named it the Savage Fox model B.

All the Stevens/Savage guns were boxlock. It still retains its correct sling bar and ring on the left side.The two main type of hammerless double barrel shotguns are sidelock and boxlock. The stock has a faint circled 'ESA' cartouche on the left side with a circled script 'P' proof on the underside in the pistol grip area. The top rear section of the comb is stamped with a rack number of '2 G/24. The stock is the correct long comb/short wrist carbine stock that has its original smooth buttplate with no trapdoor or storage compartment, with the U.S. It has the original Second Pattern one-piece barrel band with the split sling swivel with the patent date on the front side. It has the original flush fitting receiver and barrel, which has the original 1873 pattern carbine rear sight with the ladder graduated from 6-12 (600-1200 yards) on top with 1-5 (100 to 500 yards) on the right side of the base with the original integral front sight still in place. The lock is marked with the standard American Eagle crest followed by 'U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873' ahead of the hammer, the high arch breech block is marked 'MODEL/1873/eagle head/crossed arrows/US' and the serial number stamped on the top rear of the receiver. This is a very fine example of an original unaltered Custer era carbine that has all the original 1873 era carbine features. This desirable carbine is accompanied by copy of a certificate of authenticity from Grande Armee Military Collectables (Palm Beach Fla). Custer era carbines found in this range were issued to 7th U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Carbine manufactured circa late 1873 which falls right in the middle of the noted Custer era serial number range carbines (33,000-43,700). This is a wonderful example of a rarely encountered U.S.
